Protest in Abstract takes the idea of protesters united in disagreement, yet divided by the assumptions made about their actions, as a point for creative departure. By substituting messages on demonstration paraphernalia with abstract bands of colour, the work attempts to query the collective authorship, mutation and manipulation of iconographies of resistance.
This project employs the juxtaposition of complimentary and conflicting colours on demonstration paraphernalia as the central motif in order to resist appropriation, whilst enabling an irrational and unpredictable celebration of protest. Reflecting the "Do It Yourself" nature of protest, the colour combinations on the placards adhere to an abstract manifesto comprised entirely from collaged paint charts freely available from general home improvement stores.
